Description
British travellers, from the Grand Tour to the advent of mass tourism.
In 18th- and 19th-century Britain, travel acquired a defining cultural significance. From the elite tradition of the Grand Tour to the early days of mass tourism, spearheaded by Thomas Cook’s first package holidays, a multiplicity of travel practices developed. These were grounded in the belief that the discovery of new places, at home and abroad, through the process of journeying was essential not only to the construction of knowledge but also to personal development. In this seminar, we will discuss a range of texts and visual representations that reflect these diverse, interconnected practices – including aesthetic, scientific, and expansionist modes of travel - as well as the varied identities of the travellers.
Students will be expected to improve their analytical skills by studying and commenting on a selection of primary sources. They will also be encouraged to become familiar with scholarly publications, through regular reading assignments.
